Just Right Design

“‘Just enough’ means not to over-design. By appropriately restraining the design, there will be space for people to engage with it. ”— Taku Satoh

As a renowned Japanese designer, Taku Satoh has been creating designs for many major Japanese brands since the last century. He believes that good design involves finding the optimal “balance point” by understanding the true needs of customers and considering various design approaches. Meanwhile, companies that prioritize ethics and long-term thinking can significantly impact how design integrates into everyday life, with the positive outcomes often stemming from the inherent strength of the products themselves.
At 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Taku Satoh employed a relatable and life-oriented exhibition to bridge the gap between design and the general public. Through this approach, the public not only recognized the value of design but also started to ponder the question, “What is design?” Discovering the need to challenge conventional design and achieving the right “balance point” may rely on a designer’s keen and empathetic observations of everyday life, as well as their skillful application of design techniques.
